The hexagon […] is a common form that appears in nature and mathematics. There is a hexagon at the pole of Saturn; the hexagon is used to represent chemical compounds in chemistry; it is physics that determines the hexagonal shape of honeycombs.

The hexagon is a very efficient structure, but it, itself is made of triangles, another efficient structure. So I used the triangles within the hexagons to create shapes that look as though they have meaning or could serve as icons, while remaining broadly abstract.
